In a turn of events that’s more disappointing than a rainout at a baseball game, Matt Cardona, dubbed the “Indie God” of wrestling, has hit a snag in his powerhouse run through the wrestling world. Just when he was gearing up to make 2024 a banner year with dreams of high-flying bouts in AEW and a triumphant return to TNA, fate threw a wrench—or rather, a torn pec—into the works.

Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful, faster on the tweet than a hot scoop at a press conference, broke the news on X that Cardona has been ringing up promoters with the bad news. He’s suffered a torn pectoral muscle and is facing surgery that’ll bench him from upcoming showdowns. Not long after, the folks at German promotion Westside Xtreme Wrestling (wXw) chimed in to confirm the bummer, announcing that Cardona would miss their Drive of Champions event on June 1st.

Cardona kept mum on the matter until Wednesday afternoon, when he finally took to X himself. Confirming his wrestling hiatus, he shared, “Tore my pec muscle during a match Saturday. Surgery’s on the horizon. There’s never a good time for an injury, especially now, but we’ve got to keep moving forward.” True to his fighting spirit, Cardona isn’t tapping out entirely—he’s still game for meet-and-greets and signing appearances.

This weekend, while he won’t be wrestling, Cardona was slated to be ringside, backing up Steph De Lander as she vies for the Knockouts Championship against Jordynne Grace at TNA Rebellion. Whether he’ll still be in De Lander’s corner remains up in the air, like a high-stakes wrestling move.

So, while the “Indie God” may be down, he’s far from out. Cardona is proving that even when you’re on the bench, you can still cheer loud and make an impact. Stay tuned, folks, because this is one comeback story you won’t want to miss.

I like ice cream, taking a back seat, wondering who I am, and pretending kayfabe is real. May or may not be the Real Dark Brandon. For the LOLZ. MALARKEY!
