AEW has recently encountered regulatory challenges from the Oklahoma State Athletic Commission (OSAC) following an event held in Oklahoma at the end of 2023. The issue arose after Nyla Rose, a transgender wrestler, participated in a match against Alejandra Lion during the December 20, 2023, episode of “AEW Dynamite,” marking the promotion’s debut in the state.
As reported by KOKH, the OSAC issued a warning to AEW for violating Oklahoma’s 2021 law that restricts transgender athletes from competing against cisgender athletes, applicable even in the context of scripted sports entertainment such as professional wrestling. During a January meeting, minutes of which were noted by Sean O’Leary, the commission misgendered Rose while deliberating on her participation, leading to their decision to issue only a warning with a caution about potential future sanctions.
This warning stems from a precedent set by a similar case involving another wrestling promotion, which had also been flagged by the OSAC. The commission aimed to maintain consistency in its enforcement actions. In response to the commission’s decision, Rose humorously remarked on finding the “dastardly Transgender,” a playful reference to herself.
Currently, AEW has not scheduled any more events in Oklahoma for the foreseeable future. Meanwhile, Rose continues to be a vocal advocate for inclusivity within AEW, recently promoting the idea of introducing more women’s titles to the promotion. Her advocacy and role have garnered significant support from her peers in the AEW Women’s locker room, who have frequently stood by her in the face of external criticisms and discriminatory remarks.
