Hold onto your hats, sports fans, because Gable Steveson is swapping suplexes for sacks! After his WWE stint ended with a less-than-stellar release, Steveson is taking his talents to the turf, signing with none other than the Buffalo Bills. ESPN’s Adam Schefter broke the news, and it’s got the sports world buzzing louder than a vuvuzela in a packed stadium.
A Rookie in the Big Leagues
Despite never having played football, Steveson has inked a standard three-year rookie contract with the Bills. The 6-foot-1, 275-pound powerhouse is set to bring his wrestling prowess to the defensive line. Talk about a leap of faith! But Steveson is all smiles, eager to see how his grappling grit translates to gridiron glory.
“I have been fortunate to compete at the highest level of competition in my sport but am looking forward to the challenge of seeing how my wrestling skills may translate to football,” Steveson told ESPN. “I am grateful to Coach [Sean] McDermott, [GM] Brandon Beane and the Buffalo Bills organization for giving me this opportunity.”
From the Ring to the Field
Steveson got his first taste of football action in mid-May during a training session with the Bills at Highmark Stadium. His Olympic and collegiate wrestling background caught the eye of head coach Sean Michael McDermott, who believes Steveson can be a game-changer on the defensive line. And with Steveson’s arrival, the Bills have decided to part ways with punter Matt Haack, according to Schefter’s X (formerly Twitter) post.
Wrestling’s Loss is Football’s Gain
Steveson’s journey has been nothing short of spectacular. After joining WWE in September 2021, he made a memorable appearance at WrestleMania 38, where he suplexed Chad Gable into next week. His official in-ring debut came in a singles match against Baron Corbin at the 2023 “WWE NXT” The Great American Bash event. Despite some promising moments, Steveson’s WWE career fizzled out, leading to his release in May 2024.
But as one door closes, another opens. Steveson is ready to tackle his new NFL adventure head-on, and the Buffalo Bills are banking on his success.
