Hold onto your vintage wrestling tees, folks! Evan Husney, the brain behind VICE TV’s explosive docu-series “Who Killed WCW?”, recently revealed the Herculean efforts made to secure an interview with none other than the elusive former WCW owner, Ted Turner. This revelation came straight from Husney during a chat with Fightful, sparking interest and raising eyebrows across the wrestling fandom.
For those uninitiated, “Who Killed WCW?” is the latest wrestling deep dive from the creators of “Dark Side of the Ring,” currently making waves with insider stories from wrestling legends like Bret Hart, Goldberg, Kevin Nash, Booker T, and Eric Bischoff. But the elusive Turner, a key player in the WCW saga, remains conspicuously absent.
“We explored the possibility of being able to interview Ted Turner himself, and his son even tried for us and said that it might’ve been possible still. He does have health challenges. That’s from what I’ve heard. I don’t know what’s exactly going on,” Husney disclosed, leaving us all teetering on the edge of our seats. The tantalizing possibility of getting Turner’s perspective on his wrestling baby, WCW, was a golden opportunity that almost, but not quite, came to fruition.
Husney didn’t mince words about Turner’s monumental role, stating, “Eric Bischoff is a huge part of it, making it successful, but it was kept around for so long, sort of insulated and protected, because of Ted Turner.” Turner, often seen as the ultimate antagonist to Vince McMahon during the wrestling wars, would have provided a juicy perspective on the behind-the-scenes drama.
In the absence of Ted Turner, his son, Teddy Turner, stepped into the spotlight. According to Husney, Teddy was a revelation: “His son was super cool, great guy, I think he comes off great in the show. He was super helpful. It was awesome to work with him.” Teddy Turner’s insights have been invaluable, providing a glimpse into the mind of the media mogul who dared to challenge the WWE juggernaut.
So, while the series might not have Ted Turner himself, his legacy and influence are very much present, offering fans a riveting look at the rise and fall of WCW. As the series continues to air, one thing is for sure: the wrestling world’s obsession with WCW’s dramatic demise is far from over.
