Hold onto your championship belts, folks, because WWE is gearing up to sprinkle some new gold across its brands. Currently, WWE has 16 titles up for grabs across its three main brands: “WWE Raw,” “WWE SmackDown,” and “WWE NXT.” And let’s not forget the floating WWE Women’s Tag Team and WWE Speed Championships, flitting about like wrestling’s answer to the Easter Bunny. But, because there’s no such thing as too much bling, rumor has it that WWE is adding two more shiny accolades to its collection.
Word on the wrestling street, or more precisely, the “Wrestling Observer Radio,” is that the women’s division is about to get a serious upgrade. Dave Meltzer, the wrestling oracle, has confirmed whispers that WWE will introduce women’s United States and Intercontinental Championships. That’s right, ladies and gentlemen, more titles than you can shake a kendo stick at.
Meltzer spilled the beans, saying, “Somebody texted me and just goes, ‘It’s being reported out there that they’re going to create women’s U.S. and Intercontinental titles.’ I was basically told that is in fact what is being talked about. So there you go, two more championships coming, one on each brand.”
He also couldn’t resist a playful jab at AEW President Tony Khan, suggesting he might want to start a title arms race. “We don’t need more championships, but that is the thing is that they just keep adding championships,” Meltzer mused. He reminisced about the days when WWE and WCW belts cluttered the TV screen during the Invasion angle, before WWE mercifully culled the WCW titles.
“The one difference now between then and now is that they’re in a position where nothing they do is going to hurt them, as long as it’s this hot, but I don’t think we need more championships,” Meltzer added.
While the wrestling world debates the merits of more gold, one thing’s for sure: WWE’s title scene is about to get a whole lot glitzier.
