In a plot twist worthy of a wrestling storyline, Damon Kemp has announced his impending departure from WWE. Kemp, who was poised to continue with the No Quarter Catch Crew even after his brother Gable Steveson’s exit in early May, is now set to venture into the independent circuit.
Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter provided the scoop in a subscriber-exclusive report, clarifying that Kemp wasn’t released by WWE. Instead, WWE declined to renew his contract, which expires on August 13—the same day Kemp can start taking independent bookings. This news blindsided Kemp, who only learned of WWE’s decision this week.
The move has raised eyebrows within WWE circles. Kemp was widely praised for his work ethic and performances, leaving many surprised by WWE’s decision. However, Meltzer noted some foreshadowing: “NXT” had been subtly shifting Kemp out of the No Quarter Catch Crew storyline, with Tavion Heights stepping in to replace him. Heights even defeated Kemp in his final “NXT” match two weeks ago, but there was no dramatic breakup angle to mark Kemp’s exit.
Despite the timing of Kemp’s contract expiration closely following Steveson’s release, there’s no indication the two departures are connected. As for Kemp’s future, Meltzer suggests his initial market might be modest, but he anticipates a promotion will give him a shot.
Stay tuned, wrestling fans—Kemp’s next chapter in the indie scene could be as exciting as a steel cage match!
