When Chris Jericho isn’t busy imparting lessons in the wrestling ring or driving Samoa Joe through a wall, he’s making waves south of the border. Just weeks ago, Jericho attacked CMLL’s top star Mistico, setting the stage for a much-anticipated showdown. The date for this epic clash has now been set: CMLL’s 91st Anniversary Show, the biggest event in Mexican wrestling.
During last night’s “CMLL Informa,” Jericho sent in a pre-recorded video, donning a Mistico mask for added flair. In classic Jericho style, he insulted the lucha libre legend and threw down the gauntlet for a singles match at the Anniversary Show on September 13 at Arena Mexico. Mistico didn’t waste a second, accepting the challenge with the kind of fervor that makes luchadores legendary.
The CMLL Anniversary Show, known as the Aniversario, is the oldest major wrestling event in the world. Since its inception on September 21, 1934, it has been a cornerstone of lucha libre, only missing one year due to an earthquake. Traditionally headlined by high-stakes Lucha de Apuesta matches, where competitors put their hair or mask on the line, it appears Jericho and Mistico will keep their locks and masks intact for this bout, opting instead for a straight-up singles match.
This match marks Jericho’s first appearance in CMLL since September 1995, when he challenged Apolo Dantes for the CMLL World Heavyweight Title under his moniker Corazon de Leon. Despite his storied history with CMLL, this will be Jericho’s debut at an Anniversary Show, making this clash with Mistico all the more historic.
