Ladies and gentlemen, the clock is ticking on the current media rights agreement between AEW and Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), and the wrestling world is buzzing with anticipation. As reported in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter by the ever-reliable Dave Meltzer, the negotiations are still in progress. Despite some whispers suggesting a deal was already sealed, the talks are moving forward with the goal of finalizing an agreement soon. Notably, AEW hasn’t engaged with other broadcasters, putting all their chips on WBD’s table.

The timing of these negotiations could be seen as a double-edged sword. AEW’s recent dip in TV ratings might affect the perceived value of their product. However, there’s another side to the story. WBD might find themselves in need of AEW more than ever if they lose NBA broadcast rights. The NBA is reportedly close to inking deals with Amazon, NBC, and ESPN, though WBD still has a chance to match the offer.

Yet, Meltzer points out that losing NBA rights wouldn’t necessarily spell disaster for WBD. They’ve got new deals lined up with Mountain West football, Big East Conference basketball, and NASCAR, plus existing rights to March Madness, NHL hockey, and MLB baseball. And let’s not forget, WBD is eyeing UFC rights, which could shake up AEW’s Saturday night “Collision” show.

Adding to the optimism, AEW and WBD recently announced a collaboration involving DC Comics and “Adult Swim.” This move suggests that both parties are confident about closing the deal soon.

So, wrestling fans, stay tuned as AEW and WBD continue their high-stakes negotiation dance. Will they secure a new deal and continue to entertain us on TBS and TNT? The drama unfolds as we await the final bell!
