Hold onto your remotes, folks! Former WWE and UFC star Ronda Rousey might soon be punching her way onto your Netflix watchlist. After bidding farewell to the wrestling ring last year and flexing her creative muscles with a memoir and a graphic novel, Rousey has now set her sights on screenwriting. The Queen of the Octagon revealed that Netflix has already put an offer on the table for her biopic.
Rousey, who wrapped up her wrestling career with a stint on the indie circuit and in ROH, is now in the storytelling phase of her journey. Her memoir “Our Fight” hit the shelves earlier this year, and her new graphic novel “Expecting the Unexpected” is launching via Kickstarter. But don’t think for a second that she’s stopping there.
In an interview with TV Insider, Rousey shared how her newfound love for screenwriting led her to an internship with WME executive Adam Novak. “It’s because of [‘Expecting the Unexpected’] and my obsession with screenwriting I’ve been trying to educate myself,” she explained. During this internship, Rousey’s agent reminded her that Paramount had once bought her life rights, and although that script was lost in the Hollywood shuffle, it ignited a passion in her to write her own story.
With the fire lit, Rousey dove into writing her biopic, even amidst the whirlwind of pregnancy and media commitments. “For eight days straight after doing media, I would go and write and work on my screenplay and banged out the first draft. Everyone thought I had this ghostwriter because they thought it was so good. We turned it into Netflix. They loved it. They put in an offer right away. I’m just wrapping up my second draft right now,” she revealed.
The future of the project entering production remains uncertain, but if there’s one thing we’ve learned from Rousey’s career, it’s to never count her out. Whether in the ring or with a pen, Rousey knows how to fight for what she wants.
