The wrestling world is buzzing, folks! The man with a thousand catchphrases and just as many five-star matches, John Cena, has declared that 2025 will be the final chapter of his illustrious WWE career. That’s right, the Doctor of Thuganomics is hanging up his jorts! But don’t start fantasizing about Cena suddenly appearing in a rival promotion—Chris Jericho, the wizard of reinvention and Le Champion of unpredictable career moves, doesn’t see it happening. And let’s be honest, if anyone could “see” the invisible man, it would be Jericho!
In a recent chat with Sports Illustrated, Jericho didn’t mince words when asked about Cena’s potential future in AEW. “John is a WWE man through and through,” Jericho declared with the same conviction he had when he called out Goldberg in WCW. “I would be so surprised if he ever did anything outside of WWE. Congratulations to him on his incredible career. I loved our matches. It’s not like he’s riding off into the sunset—he has a lot of projects going on, and I wish him all the best.”
And let’s face it, Jericho knows a thing or two about having “projects” going on. The man’s got more side gigs than a hustling college student. But while Jericho may have done it all—from band frontman to AEW’s resident chaos bringer—he’s adamant that Cena’s heart belongs to WWE, where the 16-time World Champion has reigned supreme since 2002.
Cena’s farewell tour kicks off this December, giving fans one last ride through a Five Knuckle Shuffle of nostalgia that will culminate at WrestleMania 2025. That’s 23 years, folks—23 years of making sure we never forgot him, even when we wanted to. It’s a retirement run that promises to be more emotional than an Undertaker streak-ending, and more epic than a WrestleMania ramp.
Of course, Jericho and Cena have history. They’ve clashed in the ring so many times you’d think they were running mates on a political ticket. In fact, Jericho was one of Cena’s first major obstacles after the jorts-wearing powerhouse bulldozed his way to the top in 2005. Their encounters were so intense, they actually served as the kayfabe excuse for Jericho’s first WWE exit. Talk about making a guy rethink his career choices!
So as Cena gears up for his grand farewell, Jericho’s already thrown in the towel on any hopes of seeing Big Match John mix it up in AEW. After all, how do you find a guy who can’t be seen?
