In what can only be described as a spectacular example of Murphy’s Law—if something can go wrong, it will go wrong—AEW and NJPW star Kota Ibushi has just pulled out of two scheduled matches in Japan, and no, it wasn’t due to “creative differences.” This marks yet another chapter in Ibushi’s ongoing wrestling saga that feels like it’s being written by a frustrated soap opera scriptwriter.

Ibushi was set to re-enter the Japanese wrestling scene at DDT Pro Wrestling’s events on October 17 and 20 in Tokyo’s Korakuen Hall. But in classic Ibushi fashion, the man has once again decided to give the injury gods what they apparently crave most: his continued absence. DDT made the official announcement, presumably via a Google-translated apology, leaving fans more confused than an AEW heel turn.

Apologies and Refunds—Because What Else Can You Do?

“We would like to offer our deepest apologies to everyone who was looking forward to Ibushi’s matches,” DDT wrote. “Refunds will be provided to customers who wish to do so.” At this point, the only thing more predictable than an Ibushi injury is the speed at which refund requests will flood in.

The Golden Lovers: More Like the Golden Disappointments

Ibushi was last seen training with his long-time buddy, AEW’s Kenny Omega, a duo so famous they once made fans cry with their emotional bromance. But lately, they’ve been more absent than a referee during a tag match beatdown. Omega himself has been out with a case of Diverticulitis, and the two cryptically hinted they might return to AEW. Or not. It’s like they’re the Loch Ness Monster of wrestling—everyone’s waiting for a sighting, but no one knows when or where it’ll happen.

2023: The Year That Tried to Retire Kota Ibushi

Earlier this year, Ibushi’s misfortune hit a new low during a match against the legendary Naomichi Marufuji, where things went south faster than a botched moonsault. Ibushi was promptly hospitalized, and since then, he’s been promising a “full return” to AEW. Full return? Right now, fans would settle for a partial one, or at least an injury-free day.

With Ibushi pulling out yet again and Omega still on the mend, it looks like fans will have to continue waiting for the Golden Lovers to make their triumphant return—or any return at all, for that matter.
