Poor Sheamus—if bad luck were a championship, he’d already be a Grand Slam Champion twice over. On Monday night’s WWE Raw, the “Celtic Warrior” once again fell short of the elusive Intercontinental Championship, this time thanks to Ludwig Kaiser’s surprise interference. What began as a hard-hitting bout between Sheamus and reigning champ Bron Breakker ended with disqualification chaos and yet another wrinkle in Sheamus’ long journey toward completing his Grand Slam.

Sheamus brought the fight, as usual, nearly sealing the deal with a devastating knee strike that had fans on the edge of their seats. But just when it looked like the Brogue Kick might do the trick, Breakker countered with a spear that nearly split Sheamus in half. Thankfully, the veteran warrior’s instincts kicked in—he rolled out of the ring faster than fans rolled their eyes at yet another Sheamus heartbreak moment.

Breakker, not one to let a moment slip, went full sprint for a “super spear” outside the ring. Enter Ludwig Kaiser, wielding a lariat and ruining everyone’s plans like the guy who shows up to a party uninvited. The referee called for a disqualification, but Kaiser wasn’t done. He dropkicked Sheamus into the steel steps and then casually inserted himself into the Intercontinental title picture, no doubt pleasing his ring general, Gunther.

For Sheamus, this marks yet another chapter in his saga of almosts and maybes. Between his September loss in a title opportunity involving Kaiser and Braun Strowman and his recent momentum-building win over Kaiser, the stars seemed aligned for Monday night. Alas, they burned out too soon.
