The wrestling world is mourning the loss of Black Bart, a rugged journeyman whose career spanned over three decades. Real name Richard Harris, Bart passed away at the age of 76 following a brave fight against stage 4 colon cancer that had spread to his liver.
His wife, Linda, confirmed the news in a heartfelt social media post. “You might know him as Black Bart, but to me, he was my husband Ricky. He left us this morning. He is Resting In Peace,” she wrote.
Black Bart was a staple of the wrestling territories, leaving his mark in Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling, Championship Wrestling from Florida, World Class Championship Wrestling (WCCW), and brief but memorable stints in WWE and WCW. Known for his hard-nosed style and gruff personality, Bart captured titles like the NWA Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight Championship and tag team gold in Texas.
Bart’s legacy extended far beyond his accolades. WWE Hall of Famer JBL paid tribute to his mentor and friend, recounting their time as Texas tag team champions and their camaraderie in the locker room. “Black Bart took me under his wing and taught me how to be a professional wrestler. Bart meant the world to me. I love you, big brother. RIP,” JBL shared.
In early 2023, Harris revealed his cancer diagnosis and vowed to fight it with everything he had. After undergoing chemotherapy, his health took a turn, and it was revealed recently that he had entered hospice care.
Black Bart’s grit and colorful personality endeared him to fans and peers alike. Whether he was delivering promos with Texas-sized bravado or mentoring the next generation of talent, his impact on wrestling will not be forgotten.
