The wrestling world has lost a true legend. Osamu Nishimura, one of New Japan Pro Wrestling’s most revered technical wrestlers, has passed away at age 53 after battling cancer. Nishimura, who had fought the disease once before in 1998, succumbed to it nearly a year after his diagnosis.
Shinsuke Nakamura Pays Tribute
WWE’s Shinsuke Nakamura, who shared the ring with Nishimura many times in NJPW, took to social media to honor his friend:
“Rest in peace, Osamu Nishimura. You were as kind as an older brother and taught me so many things🍷.”
A touching tribute from one of wrestling’s modern greats to a man who left an undeniable mark on the business.
A Career That Spanned the Globe
Nishimura debuted in NJPW in 1990 and became known for his technical mastery, drawing comparisons to the greats of the past. His career took him across North America, Japan, and Mexico, competing in ECW, NWA, CMLL, AJPW, and more. He was a true throwback—more mat wrestling, less flips, but always captivating.
Despite battling illness, Nishimura continued wrestling, even competing as recently as December 8, 2024. His final year in wrestling included teaming with Dory Funk Jr., who was 83 at the time, to defeat Atsushi Onita and Raijin Yaguchi.
Beyond Wrestling
Nishimura wasn’t just a fighter in the ring—he was one outside of it, too. He successfully transitioned into politics, serving on the Tokyo Bunkyo Ward Assembly four times. Whether in the squared circle or public office, he made an impact.
He is survived by his wife, Megumi, and their son, Mayu.
The world has lost a legend, but his influence will live on in every wrestler who learned from his craft, every fan who appreciated his style, and every person whose life he touched.
Rest in peace, Osamu Nishimura.
