After months of drama, contract disputes, and cryptic social media posts, it looks like Rey Fenix is officially done with AEW.
According to Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio, Fenix has been removed from AEW’s official website and released from his contract—marking the end of what can only be described as a messy breakup between the former International Champion and Tony Khan’s promotion.
The Long Road to Free Agency
The Fenix-AEW situation has been a slow-burning disaster, with reports dating back to late 2024 suggesting that both Fenix and his brother Penta were looking to jump ship to WWE. However, while Penta’s contract expired at the end of 2024, allowing him to debut in WWE this past January, Fenix wasn’t so lucky.
- AEW extended Fenix’s contract by adding “injury time,” preventing him from leaving alongside his brother.
- This led to Fenix publicly voicing his frustration on social media, claiming AEW ignored him when he needed medical help after sustaining injuries last May.
- His contract was originally expected to keep him in AEW through 2025, but after continued tensions, it appears AEW has finally granted him his release.
What’s Next for Fenix?
Meltzer reports that Fenix is expected to sign with WWE as soon as possible, meaning a reunion with Penta could be on the horizon. This move would make Fenix the latest in a growing list of former AEW stars—including Ricky Starks (now Ricky Saints), Malakai Black, and Miro—to exit AEW in recent months.
While AEW has yet to officially confirm the release, Fenix’s removal from the roster page is usually a telltale sign that the deal is done.
With WrestleMania season heating up, could Fenix make his WWE debut sooner rather than later? Stay tuned.
